The Sappers (a nickname rooted in the soldier's term for combat engineers, often borrowed by oilfield crews) became a charter member of the Class D Southwestern League in 1921 and finished 68 76 in fifth place under managers Jerry Jones and Larry Quigley. The club bounced back to capture the
