Perry's expedition to the Orient. Between the years of 1852 and 1854, President Millard Filmore ordered United States Navy Commodore Matthew Clabraith Perry to lead a squadron to Japan in order to establish diplomatic relations, open economic trade ports and protect American property and seamen in the
