Handmade boxes with surprise carved snakes inside seem to have become a thing right around 1900

It can be stood from either end

I just though these were charming--and excellent vehicles for delivering great old paint

SOLD Delicately Rendered Portrait of a Young Woman in Green with Fan, Antique Watercolor in Period Frame gesture which I would guess wasI purchased this one from a dealer in North Carolina, and she does seem a bit of the Southern(ish) belle with fan in hand, though I am not certain of her origins. Later 19th century I believe, in what appears to be her original gold gessoed frame, suiting her perfectly. Naive but also very delicately rendered, with finely drawn features and wonderful painterly application of the green of her dress. And with her eyes cast slightly, upward, perhaps in
