Constructed of gilded bronze with multi coloured enamels, the obverse consisting of a black enameled shield overlaid by German Order shield defaced by a Baltic Cross, a shield featuring a Silesian Eagle, and a Totekopf (representing key Freikorps units engaged in combat in the east), surrounded by a white enameled ring bearing a gilt inscription of EINSATZ FR DEUTSCHLAND 1918 1923 (OPERATION FOR GERMANY 1918
